AWS Network Services
Identify AWS network services
What you will learn
- Explain Amazon VPC's role as a logically isolated network the customer fully controls.
- Explain what Amazon Route 53 does and the routing policies it supports.
- Connect VPC, Route 53, and CloudFront as integrated layers in a single request's journey.
- Distinguish private networking (VPC) from global content delivery (CloudFront).
One simple request — opening a website in a browser — actually passes through several network layers in AWS: the domain name is resolved to an address via Route 53, the content may be served from the nearest point via CloudFront, and finally the request reaches protected resources inside the application's own private VPC.
The core services
| Amazon VPC | A logically isolated private virtual network, which the customer divides into subnets and fully configures the routing and security for. |
|---|---|
| Amazon Route 53 | A scalable DNS service that resolves domain names to IP addresses and supports health checks and multiple routing policies. |
| Amazon CloudFront | A content delivery network that caches copies at Edge Locations close to users to reduce latency. |
One request's journey through the three layers
The user types the domain name
Route 53 resolves it to an IP address
CloudFront serves the cached content from the nearest Edge Location
Any request needing live data reaches resources inside a VPC
What matters on the exam
- VPC is about isolation and network control inside your account, while CloudFront is about fast delivery to users worldwide — don't confuse them despite both being "network" services.
- Route 53 does not host content itself — it only resolves a name into an address the request gets routed to.
The three work together in almost any real application
A typical web application uses all three together: Route 53 for the name, CloudFront to speed up static content, and a VPC to protect the database and backend servers — they're not alternatives to each other but integrated layers.
Quick check
Answer in your head first, then reveal.
Which service resolves a domain name to an IP address?Reveal the answer
Amazon Route 53.
What is the difference between VPC and CloudFront?Reveal the answer
VPC is your own isolated private network you manage, while CloudFront is fast content delivery to users worldwide.
Does Route 53 host the content itself?Reveal the answer
No — it only resolves the name to an address.
