Network Monitoring Technologies

Network monitoring technologies

What you will learn

  • Explain the difference between SNMP polling and trap notifications.
  • Recall the core SNMP elements: MIB, OID, and community string.
  • Distinguish flow data from full packet capture by purpose and storage size.
  • Explain syslog's role in centrally collecting event logs from multiple devices.

Network monitoring needs two complementary approaches: regularly asking devices about their state (polling), and waiting for devices to speak up on their own the instant something important happens (traps). SNMP supports both, and each suits a different kind of information.

Polling vs. Trap

PollingTrap
Who initiatesThe monitoring system asks the device periodicallyThe device sends a notification immediately on a specific event
Detection speedSlower — limited by polling frequencyImmediate when the event occurs
Ideal useContinuous values like CPU or bandwidth usageInstant events like a port going down or crossing a threshold

Core SNMP concepts

MIBManagement Information Base — a structured hierarchy describing every value readable from a device via SNMP.
OIDA unique identifier for one specific value inside a MIB — like a precise address for a single value.
Community String / SNMPv3The plaintext secret in SNMPv1/v2 (unencrypted, weak security) versus actual authentication and encryption in SNMPv3.
SyslogA protocol that collects event logs from multiple devices into one central location, with a defined severity level per message.

The flow data vs. full packet capture trap

Flow data (like NetFlow) summarizes who talked to whom, when, and how much, without storing the packet contents — efficient for pattern analysis. Full packet capture also stores actual content, which is heavier to store and slower to analyze, so it's used only when the content itself needs inspection, not just the conversation pattern.

Quick check

Answer in your head first, then reveal.

  1. Which monitoring method detects a port outage faster?Reveal the answer

Trap — an immediate notification from the device itself.

  2. What's the difference between a MIB and an OID?Reveal the answer

A MIB is the full structure describing all available values; an OID uniquely identifies one specific value within it.

  3. Why is flow data preferred over full packet capture for analyzing conversation patterns?Reveal the answer

Because it achieves the goal with far less storage, without needing to store the packet contents themselves.
