Physical Security Devices

Physical security devices

What you will learn

  • Explain an access control vestibule's role in preventing tailgating.
  • Distinguish the deterrence, detection, and evidentiary roles of CCTV cameras.
  • Recall examples of biometrics as a physical authentication factor.
  • Connect physical security to defense in depth as an additional layer.

Physical security complements digital security, it doesn't replace it: the strongest encryption doesn't help if an unauthorized person can physically walk into the server room and steal the hardware directly. That makes physical security a first layer of defense in depth.

Common physical security devices

Access Control VestibuleA vestibule or lock system that verifies each individual and admits them one at a time, preventing more than one person entering on a single badge (tailgating).
CCTVSurveillance cameras — their visible presence acts as a deterrent, and their recording acts as a detection and evidentiary tool after an incident.
BiometricsAuthentication via a unique physical trait (fingerprint, retina) — hard to copy or steal compared to a card or password.

Common confusion

The camera itself doesn't physically prevent intrusion (that's the locks' and barriers' job), and doesn't replace guards but complements their work — its deterrence comes from raising the perceived likelihood of detection for anyone considering intrusion, not from directly stopping them.

Quick check

Answer in your head first, then reveal.

  1. What is an access control vestibule's primary purpose?Reveal the answer

Preventing more than one person entering on a single badge (tailgating) by verifying each individual before admitting them.

  2. What's the difference between CCTV's deterrence role and its evidentiary role?Reveal the answer

Deterrence comes from its visible presence before any attempt; the evidentiary role comes from its recording after an actual incident.

  3. Why are biometrics harder to steal than a card or password?Reveal the answer

Because they're a unique physical trait of the person themselves, not something carried or memorized that can be taken from them.
