Plan and manage project compliance
Plan and manage project compliance
What you will learn
- Name the four main compliance categories (legal/regulatory, industry standards, organizational policy, contracts).
- Explain why non-compliance risks are handled with higher priority than ordinary project risks.
- Describe an audit's role in verifying ongoing compliance.
- Connect compliance to the project management plan as something planned for, not reacted to after the fact.
Compliance isn't synonymous with law alone. A project manager faces binding requirements from several sources at once: government laws and regulations, recognized industry standards, internal organizational policy, and contractual terms with external parties — all of which must be planned for and verified throughout the project life cycle, not discovered late.
The four compliance categories
| Legal / Regulatory | Binding government laws and regulations — non-compliance can expose the organization to legal penalties or fines. |
|---|---|
| Industry Standards | Standards recognized within a specific sector (technical, health, construction) that may not be formal law but are professionally expected. |
| Organizational Policy | Internal policies the organization itself imposes on all its projects, regardless of any external requirement. |
| Contractual | Binding terms agreed with an external party (client, supplier) within the project's contract. |
What matters on the exam
- Non-compliance risks are usually handled with higher priority than ordinary project risks — they can halt the project entirely or expose the organization to penalties, regardless of execution quality.
- An audit is the main tool for verifying ongoing compliance, not a one-time event only at the project's start.
Compliance is planned for, not reacted to
A good project manager builds compliance requirements into the project management plan from the start — a requirements log, an audit schedule, a clear owner for each requirement — instead of waiting to discover a violation and then treating it as a crisis.
