Business Acumen
What you will learn
- Separate internal from external factors in SWOT and know the purpose of PESTLE and Five Forces.
- Read financial statement basics and distinguish fixed from variable costs.
- Name the four Balanced Scorecard perspectives.
- Explain when human capital becomes a sustainable competitive advantage.
You won't persuade a leader to fund a program unless you speak their language: revenue, cost, risk, and market share. Business acumen turns an HR professional from an order-taker into a partner who understands why their programs matter to business results.
Environmental analysis tools
| SWOT | Strengths and weaknesses (internal), opportunities and threats (external). |
|---|---|
| PESTLE | Scanning external factors: political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental. |
| Porter's Five Forces | Industry attractiveness: new entrants, substitutes, buyer power, supplier power, rivalry. |
| Balanced Scorecard | Measuring performance from four perspectives: financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth. |
Income statement vs. balance sheet
| Income statement | Balance sheet | |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | Revenue, expenses, and profit | Assets, liabilities, and equity |
| Time frame | Over a period (quarter, year) | At a specific point in time |
| HR relevance | Pay and benefits are among the largest expenses | Liabilities such as accrued end-of-service benefits |
Human capital as competitive advantage
Under the resource-based view, a resource that gives sustainable advantage is valuable, rare, and hard to imitate. Skills, culture, and tacit knowledge achieve that more than any asset that can be bought.
What matters on the exam
- Commissions are variable costs; base salaries and rent are fixed.
- Zero-based budgeting justifies every item from scratch; incremental budgeting builds on last year.
- HR's contribution to expansion decisions: skill availability, cost, and regulations in the new market.
