Managing a Global Workforce

Managing a Global Workforce

What you will learn

  • Distinguish parent-, host-, and third-country nationals.
  • Compare ethnocentric, polycentric, geocentric, and regiocentric approaches.
  • Explain the balance sheet approach to expatriate pay.
  • Plan pre-departure preparation and post-assignment repatriation.

Managing a global workforce means juggling multiple labor laws, currencies, and cultures at once. International assignments are a costly investment, and they usually fail not for lack of technical skill but from adjustment difficulty or poor repatriation planning.

Classifying international employees

Parent-Country NationalFrom the headquarters country, working at a foreign branch.
Host-Country NationalFrom the country where the branch is located.
Third-Country NationalFrom neither the headquarters country nor the branch country.

International staffing approaches

Ethnocentric / PolycentricGeocentric / Regiocentric
Who runs subsidiariesEthnocentric: parent nationals. Polycentric: host nationalsGeocentric: the best regardless of nationality. Regiocentric: from within the region
Trade-offEthnocentric: control and HQ consistency but weaker local insight. Polycentric: strong local insight but limited paths to HQGeocentric: widest talent pool but costliest and most complex. Regiocentric: a balance of the two within the region

The balance sheet approach

An engineer moves from Riyadh to a higher-cost city. The approach preserves their home purchasing power, compensating for housing, cost-of-living, and tax differences, so they neither lose money by moving nor gain so much that returning becomes hard.

What matters on the exam

  • Family adjustment difficulty is a leading cause of assignment failure; cultural training should include the family.
  • Plan repatriation well before the assignment ends, with a role that uses the experience gained.
  • Cross-border personal data transfers are subject to local data protection laws.
